Mattress Size and Dimensions
Choosing from the many mattress sizes is just as important as deciding on a mattress type or comfort level. The right size is comfortable, not just for quality sleep, but also for your bedroom space, too. Which of the different bed sizes fits you? It depends on the number of people sleeping in the bed and the size of your room. You’ll want to leave at least two feet of space around your bed for easy movement and to allow room for furniture. Before you get started, check out our mattress size chart with the list of mattress sizes in inches for an accurate assessment.

California King Mattress
Are you considering a California king size mattress for your bedroom? Out of all the different bed sizes, a Cal king is the largest and requires a minimum room size of 12 x 12 feet. The California king size mattress dimensions are 72 x 84 in, which is 4 inches longer than a standard king, and 4 inches narrower. What that means is that while there isn’t as much width as a king, the extra length is ideal for taller sleepers — around 6’5” (no more feet hanging off the bed!). But, if you’re wondering if a California king size mattress has enough room for you and your partner to co-sleep with your kiddos, the answer is of course! You and your family will be snoozing through the night, no problem. And if you have your eye on an adjustable base, a split Cal king mattress size is just the ticket.
Split California King Mattress
A split California king mattress size is ideal for when you and your partner want a California king mattress and have different mattress or sleep preferences. A split Cal king has the same dimensions as a regular Cal king mattress (72 x 84 in) and fits the same room size; however, the split mattress gives you more versatility. A split Cal king mattress size is easier to maneuver around your home’s tight corners or hallways. And if you and your partner have different sleep needs, like if one of you has sleep apnea and the other has circulation issues, for example, pairing your mattress with a power base is ideal.
Thinking of upgrading to a king size mattress? The king size mattress dimensions are 76 x 80 in, which is 4 inches wider than a Cal king and 4 inches shorter. King mattresses are the widest of the standard mattress measurements, which makes them ideal for couples who love to spread out or cuddle with children and/or with a fur baby or two. Ideally, a king size mattress is suitable for a minimum room size around 10 x 12 feet so, keep that in mind when measuring your space. Overall, if you and your partner are looking for a sleep treat that you’ll both enjoy, a king mattress is the way to go.
Split King Mattress
Finding the mattress that suits your sleep habits and those of your partner is possible with a split king mattress size. A split king mattress size is no different in size than a standard king — at 76 x 80 in — and fits the same room sizes. However, a split king mattress is basically two twin XL mattresses put together, which allows for several benefits. With a king size split adjustable mattress paired with an adjustable bed foundation, you and your significant other can sleep according to your own sleep preferences without disturbing the other. Whether you’re trying to lessen someone’s snoring (you both know whose!) or avoiding bad sleep factors that lead to insomnia, a split king provides both of you what you need to sleep soundly. And since the split nature provides a built-in barrier, you’ll avoid moving into each other’s sides and keep motion transfer to a minimum.
A queen size mattress is the most common out of all the other mattress sizes. This is because the queen mattress dimensions are 60 x 80 in, which means it will fit inside rooms with a minimum of 10 x 10 feet. A queen size mattress is big enough for couples on their first mattress or who don’t have the room for a king. But if you’re a single sleeper who loves having room to spread out while you sleep, a queen is your ideal size. Or, if you’re looking to add a bed in your guestroom, a queen is an excellent choice to accommodate them (especially if those guests go by Mom and Dad).
If you have a compact room size around 9.6 x 10.6 feet and you’re a single sleeper, a full size mattress will do just the trick. Full size mattress dimensions are 54 x 75 in, which is ideal for guest rooms or teens who have outgrown their old twin bed. While full size mattresses are larger than twins, double beds don’t have quite enough room to make co-sleeping with a partner comfortable. However, if cuddling together is how you two sleep best, a full size mattress will provide cozy comfort until you can upgrade to a queen. Keep in mind that a full XL or full long mattress has 5 inches extra in length to accommodate taller sleepers.
A twin size mattress is exactly what you’re looking for when you need to upgrade your little kid to their first big-kid bed. Twin mattress dimensions are 39 x 75 in and require a minimum room size of 7 x 10 feet but will fit inside bigger rooms with no problem. Twin mattresses are also ideal if you need extra beds for a trundle or daybed. You can be ready for the children’s sleepovers and for any overnight guests in the blink of an eye. And if you’re upgrading your kid’s bedroom with a bunk bed, twin mattresses are exactly what you need.
Twin XL Mattress
Debating whether to upgrade to a twin XL mattress size? The twin XL mattress dimensions are 5 inches longer than a standard twin, which makes them 38 x 80 in. The extra length makes a twin XL mattress size the ideal choice for tall teens or for adults sleeping over in the guest bedroom. As for room sizes, a twin long mattress requires the same minimum of 7 x 10 feet as a standard twin size mattress. And if you like the idea of a split king mattress with different mattress preferences, two twin XL mattresses of different makeups is exactly what you need.
