Why Trust Us?

If you're a fan of the brand's well-received Purple Mattress or just want a taste of what they have to offer, one of the Purple pillows could be right up your alley. Purple has a few options for you to choose from, whether you want something more traditional or want to try the pillows that use Hyper-Elastic Polymer.

Purple launched its first mattress in 2015 and has since expanded its offerings to include a variety of mattresses, sheets, and pillows. The Purple Pillow is its standard model and features the company's Purple Grid, a specialty material also found in the Purple Mattress.

Along with a Purple Grid core, the Purple Pillow comes with two removable foam boosters that allow you to customize its loft and feel. This combination of materials makes the Purple Pillow an excellent performer in terms of comfort, durability, and temperature regulation.

In this review, our Mattress Land sleep advisors will discuss the three Purple pillows: Purple Pillow, Purple Harmony, and the Kid's Purple Pillow. Continue reading on for our Purple pillow review to learn more about them and why you should or should not spend the extra money on a comfortable pillow.

About Purple

Purple, a popular mattress-in-a-box company, is changing the industry with its responsive, purple-colored polymer grid design. It's marketed as having cooling properties and being stretchy but supportive. After years of using its technology in medical settings, specifically hospitals, the company entered the consumer market in 2017. Since then, it has expanded its product line to include bed pillows, blankets, pajamas, and even seat cushions.

What is a Purple Pillow?

pile of Purple pillows

The Purple Pillow, like the main layer in its mattresses, is made of the company's proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid. The pillow provides many of the same advantages as Purple mattresses. It provides support, responsiveness, breathability, and durability in a much smaller package.

The Purple Pillow measures 24 by 16 inches and is about 3 inches deep. Although it is slightly smaller than a standard-size pillow (20 by 30 inches), it weighs significantly more at nearly 12 pounds. Each pillow includes two polyester boosters that allow users to adjust the height of their pillow. Each booster is the same length and width as the pillow; one is 1/2 inch, and the other is 1-inch thick. The pillow also includes a polyester blend cover that is designed to wick moisture away from the Purple grid and keep it clean. The Purple Pillow is latex-free and made of hypoallergenic materials, and it is CertiPUR-US, and Clean Air GOLD certified, so you can sleep comfortably.

Purple also sells the Harmony, TwinCloud, and kids' pillows in addition to the standard pillow. Purple's grid technology is featured in the Harmony and kids pillows, while Twin Cloud has a silicon fiber fill and Plush has a polyfill. The grid that surrounds the latex core distinguishes Harmony from the original pillow. The children's pillows are simply scaled-down versions of the original.

Purple Pillow Review Breakdown

A Purple pillow is an appealing option for those looking for the distinct feel of the Purple Grid. This material, known as a hyper-elastic polymer, responds to the weight of your head and neck and quickly returns to its original shape when the weight is removed.

The Purple Grid's ability to adapt to pressure makes it an excellent choice for side and back sleepers who require additional support from their pillow to maintain a comfortable neck angle.

The Purple Pillow is adjustable thanks to the two removable polyfoam boosters, making it easier to find the ideal height and feel for your needs. To provide a better fit for your body, the Purple Grid conforms to the contours of your neck and head.

Another advantage of the Purple Pillow is its ability to keep you cool. The Purple Grid allows air to flow freely. Heat retention is avoided by combining this ventilation with a stretchy and breathable cover.

We'll go over the Purple pillow in detail, but we'll also include information about Purple's other pillow models to give you more context for comparison.

Is Purple Pillow a Good Pillow for You?

You'll need a pillow that can accommodate your particular sleeping style. So, here's a quick rundown of who we think will benefit from the Purple pillow and who should consider another pillow.

Who should try the Purple pillow:

  • The Purple pillow can be used in all three sleeping positions — back, stomach, and side — making it an excellent choice for combination sleepers who alternate between positions.
  • If you prefer a firmer pillow, the Purple is a good choice. It's firm but still cradles your head and neck for contouring.
  • Hot sleepers will appreciate how cool the Purple pillow keeps them. The Purple grid allows for plenty of airflow, and the pillow cover is breathable, so heat shouldn't be trapped.

Who should not try the Purple pillow:

  • We wouldn't recommend the Purple pillow if you prefer a softer pillow. We found it to be too firm for sleepers who prefer a pillow that is soft enough for them to sink into.
  • Furthermore, if you prefer a more traditional pillow, the Purple grid may not be for you. It lacks the squishy, moldable feel of down and the conforming, sinking-in feel of foam — it's truly unlike any other pillow we've tried.
  • Because the Purple pillow only comes in one standard size, it may not be the best option if you need a king-size pillow.

Purple Pillow Construction and Design

Purple Harmony pillow showing grid and cover

Before we get into the specifics of Purple pillow construction in our Purple Pillow review, we should mention that Purple pillows weigh a whopping 11.7 lbs. This long-lasting and dense gel-flex pillow ensures zero movement while you sleep, eliminating the need to constantly adjust your pillow.

The pillow is made of Hyper-Elastic Polymer, a proprietary gel-like material. This is visible on all Purple mattresses, which is why so many people are drawn to Purple products.

The following are some of the benefits and drawbacks of Hyper-Elastic Polymer:

  • It is responsive and makes switching sleeping positions at night a breeze.
  • It also has a slinky, malleable feel to it, making moving the pillow difficult.
  • It also doesn't need to be fluffed, so the Purple pillow stays the same height and shape all night. Purple uses this as one of its main marketing points when promoting this pillow. It's a long-lasting pillow that provides both pressure relief and support.
  • The Hyper-Elastic Polymer material is also laid out in a grid format. This improves airflow, which we'll go over in more detail later.

The Purple pillow is a one-sided pillow, which means it cannot be flipped. Zippers on the bottom allow you to open the pillow so that you can wash the cover.

The Purple Pillow Feels Unique

It has the feel of a softer, gel/rubbery material. It's comfortable and interesting, but it's not for everyone. If you prefer a more traditional pillow, the Purple pillow is undeniably not for you.

However, if you're willing to try something new and are intrigued by the Purple Pillow's responsive, supportive, and pressure-relieving nature, who am I to stop you? Just keep in mind that it is unlike any other pillow on the market (in a good or bad way, depending on your personal preferences).

Pricing Information

The pillow market has a wide price range, but most pillows cost between $20 and $200. The loft, interior construction, cover materials, and other features and design details all have different prices. Higher-end materials or a more complex and intricate design are common features of more expensive pillows.

Which Purple Pillow is Best for You?

  • The Purple Pillow is made of the same material as the Purple mattress, and it is temperature neutral and conforms well. The original Purple pillow is still the best option for back sleepers who require more neck support.
  • The Purple TwinCloud Pillow is an entirely different case, as it is filled with silicone-coated gel fibers and looks like a traditional pillow. The Purple TwinCloud pillow also has a pair of zippers that allow users to adjust the pillow's loft, making it firm or soft as desired. Finally, as the least expensive option, we believe it is the most accommodating.
  • The Harmony Purple Pillow falls somewhere in the middle between the other pillows in terms of support and is best for those looking for a luxurious, breathable sleeping experience. It has the same revolutionary Hyper-Elastic Polymer as the Purple mattress but a Talalay latex support layer.

Is the Purple Pillow Worth it?

Ultimately, the Purple pillow stands out among the pillows we've tested due to its unconventional materials and distinct Purple grid feel. The Purple pillow is fairly firm. The grid wraps around your head and neck, cradling them just enough to keep your spine aligned. As a result, the Purple pillow can accommodate any sleeping position, with or without boosters. This makes the pillow an excellent choice for those who require pressure relief from their pillow.

If you still have questions after this Purple pillow review, let's answer them!

How long does a Purple pillow last?

A one-year warranty covers the Original Purple pillow, but it should last at least three years.

How do you clean the Purple Pillow?

The original pillow's cover is machine washable on cold. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer portion should be hand-washed.
